Have your say on the council’s spending plans and council tax

Thursday, 04 January 2018

Central Bedfordshire Council’s Executive will be considering draft revenue and capital budgets at a meeting on 9th January.  As the reports for this are published, we are launching our consultation which will run until 29th January.

The headlines from these reports are as follows:

• Next year we anticipate spending some £190m on local public services.
• But we continue to face big increases in demands and reducing funds.
• For example, we’ve seen a 3x increase in the numbers of people needing temporary accommodation since 2014, a 45% increase in looked after children since 2012 and a 46% increase in residents aged 85 and over since 2007.
• Meanwhile, our annual grant has reduced from £49m in our first year of operation to less than £5m next year.
• To bridge the gap between what we need and what we anticipate in terms of income, we have a plan that will deliver efficiency savings of £13.8m.  We are also consulting on the Adult Social Care precept (with an increase in council tax of 3%) and increases in general Council Tax of up to 3%.
